104th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Turkish Grand National Assembly was discussed at our university

Uşak University Atatürk’s Principles, Revolution History Research, Application Center, and the History Society held a conference titled “104th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Turkish Grand National Assembly”.

The conference, which was held in Mustafa Kemal Pasha Amphitheater and Prof. Dr. Temuçin Faik Ertan from Ankara University Institute of Turkish Revolution History attended as keynote speaker, was attended by Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Osman Birgin, Uşak Deputy Mayor Mehmet Akif Şanlı, faculty deans, college directors, academicians, guests and students.

Prof. Dr. Sadiye Tutsak, Director of Atatürk's Principles and Revolution History Research and Application Center, started her speech by saying “The Turkish people, who have kept the lands they have lived on for centuries as their homeland, have demonstrated their national will by giving life and shedding blood under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Paşa in order not to lose their homeland. I commemorate them all with respect and gratitude.” and drew attention to the following points in her speech: “The will of the Turkish People will be gathered under the umbrella of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on April 23, 1920, after a very arduous process. Mustafa Kemal Paşa's statement that it was imperative to form a government, that it was not possible to temporarily elect a head of government or recognize a proxy for the sultan, that the representative of the national will was the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and that there was no power above this assembly, shows how much he prioritized the will of the people. Mustafa Kemal Paşa, who laid out the working style of the parliament in this resolution, initiated the process leading to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey based on national sovereignty. Today, our esteemed professor Prof. Dr. Temuçin Faik Ertan will explain the process to us in detail. I thank them for their participation.”

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Temuçin Faik Ertan gave detailed information about the extraordinary conditions that prepared the opening of the First Parliament and the climate at the time of the opening of the parliament.

Prof. Dr. Ertan explained the characteristics according to which the Ottoman lands were divided by the imperialist states after the First World War, and described the legal path followed by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk when he opened the First Assembly. In his speech, Prof. Dr. Ertan also mentioned the structure of the First Assembly and the difference of the constitution it created from all other constitutions. The conference ended with answering the questions of the participants.

At the end of the program, Prof. Dr. Osman Birgin, Acting Rector, presented Prof. Dr. Temuçin Faik Ertan with a plaque of our university and Mehmet Akif Şanlı, Deputy Mayor of Uşak Municipality, with a certificate of appreciation and a group photo was taken.
