A conference titled “The Importance of Biodiversity Protection in the Transition to Renewable Energy” was organized by Uşak University Energy, Environment and Sustainability Application and Research Center.

Uşak University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics faculty member Prof. Dr. Ali Nafiz Ekiz, who was a speaker at the event held at Mustafa Kemal Paşa Amphitheater, made a comprehensive presentation on global environmental problems, energy policies and biodiversity. Prof. Dr. Ekiz touched on environmental damage caused by fossil fuels, climate crisis and energy security issues, and emphasized that the transition to renewable energy sources is not a choice but a necessity. The presentation covered the three basic components of biodiversity, species, genetics and ecosystem diversity in detail. Prof. Dr. Ali Nafiz Ekiz emphasized that especially bees, insects and microorganisms play critical roles in terms of pollination, soil health and ecological balance; It was emphasized that the extinction of these creatures would directly affect food security and human health.

Drawing attention to the protection of genetic heritage through the example of the Svalbard Seed Vault in Norway, Prof. Dr. Ekiz warned that if current energy policies continue, the world ecosystem could experience an irreversible collapse. He also addressed possible scenarios that could result from the human population exceeding its carrying capacity, reminding that every individual in society has a responsibility towards nature.
While evaluating the advantages of renewable energy systems in terms of environmental sustainability, economic development and energy independence, Prof. Dr. Ekiz also analyzed the effects of wind turbines and solar panels on agricultural lands from a scientific perspective. He also made suggestions on ways to produce energy without harming nature and the correct use of land.

At the end of the conference, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Prof. Dr. Ekiz for his contributions. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Şahin, Director of the Energy, Environment and Sustainability Application and Research Center, who made the closing speech of the event, emphasized that environmental awareness and young people should have a sustainability vision, and said, “The green world of the future will be possible with today’s conscious individuals.”
