Disability Awareness Activities Continue at Usak University

Disability Awareness activities were carried out at the Student Life Center, which serves students and staff, at Usak University on May 29, 2023, by the Disabled Unit Coordination Office of Usak University.

The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Kenan Taş, Vice Rector of Usak University, representatives of universities from different countries located at Usak University within the scope of the International Staff Week, academic and administrative staff, students, representatives from the Ministry of Family and Social Services, disability associations, and our guests staying in the dormitories on our university campus who were affected by the earthquake.

The event, which started with an awareness walk, began with opening speeches. First, Beyza Nur Aygören, the Representative of Special Needs Students at the Disabled Unit Coordination Office, explained to the participants what it means to be a disabled individual at Usak University. Aygören stated that important work is being done at Usak University to become an inclusive university and emphasized that the management and academicians of Usak University have always supported them. Ali Oruç Yılmaz, the Representative of Special Needs Students at the Usak University Senate, drew attention to the concept of disability in his speech.

Dr. Şule Güçyeter, the Coordinator of the Disabled Unit, mentioned the awareness activities carried out at our university this year in her speech. Güçyeter emphasized the importance and value of the awareness and expertise of those working in the field of special education for individuals with special needs. She also highlighted the important role of each member of society in ensuring accessibility.

Following the speeches, our students presented poetry recitations and solo performances. Then, the folk dance show prepared by the Research Assistant Ayşe Killi, a member of the Disabled Unit, took place accompanied by the music performance of the USDEM team.

In addition to the event, there were awareness activities at the exhibition booth of the "Engel Tanımayanlar Derneği" (Association of Those Who Do Not Recognize Barriers), the diabetes booth of Yenal Yıldırım, the deputy civil defense expert of our university, and the booths of the Disabled Unit Coordination Office. The booths received great interest from the participants.

The event ended with the distribution of treats and the presentation of certificates of appreciation to those who contributed to the program.
