Walnut Cultivation Panel was Held

“Walnut Cultivation Panel” organized by Uşak University Faculty of Agriculture, Uşak Commodity Exchange, Uşak University Continuing Education Research and Application Center (USEM) was held on January 6, 2023 at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Congress and Culture Center.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. İdris Kabalcı, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Çelen, President of Uşak Commodity Exchange Mustafa Sezer, Uşak University Continuing Education Research and Application Center Assoc. Dr. Fatma Akyüz, Walnut Producers from Uşak, academics and students attended.

In his opening speech, Vice Rector Prof. said that the meetings where producers and researchers come together bring a culture to both the city and the participants. Dr. İdris Kabalcı stated that as Uşak University, its doors are open for research that will add value to the city.

In his speech, Uşak University Faculty of Agriculture Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Çelen explained the agricultural sector's impact in determining countries' development.

Mustafa Sezer, President of Uşak Commodity Exchange, stated that they are happy to organize such an important panel for farmers with Uşak University and are ready for new collaborations.

In the panel that attracted great attention, Assoc. Dr. Ayşen Melda Çolak from Isparta University of Applied Sciences, Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Polat from Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University, Prof. Dr. Yaşar Akça and Walnut Producer Veli Koç gave information to the audience about walnut production.

Assoc. Dr. Ayşen Melda Çolak explained the past and present of walnut production in Uşak with scientific data. In his presentation, Assoc. Dr. Çolak talked about the effects of the climate and soil structure of the region on walnut production, the increase in the number of producers, and the breeds used.

Having studies on walnut breeds, Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Polat emphasized the importance of race selection. Emphasizing the importance of the strain to be selected in walnut production, as well as its suitability for the climate, Assoc. Dr. Polat gave detailed information about foreign and domestic walnut species.

Walnut Producer Veli Koç talked about the problems in walnut production. Koç highlighted the problems regarding producer and venue sources.

Professor from Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University. Dr. Yaşar Akça explained the new methods applied in walnut cultivation. While describing the advantages and disadvantages of the new methods applied, Prof. Dr. Akça also gave ideas for solutions and explained the effects of factors such as race selection, pruning and irrigation on yield with numerical data.

At the end of the panel, a plaque and a certificate of appreciation were given to the panelists on behalf of our university.

After the panel, Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Polat, Walnut Producer Veli Koç and Gaziosmanpaşa University Prof. Dr. Yaşar Akça, Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Çelen and Assoc. Dr. Ayşen Melda Çolak visited Rector Prof. Dr. Ekrem Savaş.
